Creating Mobile & Web Based Video Training Nuggets that Enhance Team Performance
Vodafone understands the value and importance of innovative types of blended learning. Traditional eLearning, for example, has been regularly augmented with the communication capabilities of their own network to provide more effective learning. In 2006 they took the decision to support key training initiatives with web and mobile video-based learning. Their objective was to reinforce key learning messages and encourage exceptional team performance. In essence they recognised that training and corporate communications are not be a cost of doing business but a source of competitive advantage
Channel Content were engaged to
deliver two mobile learning solutions, each of which had different business objectives.
- The first was intended to reinforce key communication skills that Vodafone employees acquired during a series of business communications workshops
- The second reported on a series of team-driven initiatives intended to improve Vodafone's business performance. This is being used as
both an acknowledgement of the work being carried out by people at Vodafone and as a motivational aid for the coming year.
To meet the objectives for the first of these we created a series of video learning “nuggets” that were delivered via 3G networks to mobile phones. The first project of its kind in Vodafone, the project has been a huge success:
- Creating a demand for more learning delivery in this format; and
- Exceeding the use of traditional eLearning materials
Our solution for the team initiatives project involved creating a series of stories describing the challenges each team faced and how they went about addressing them. Each clip was presented as a "news item" with voiceovers being used to tell part of the story. These were "topped and tailed" by an interview with the national retail team director.
Because of the manner in which they were designed, created and produced each clip could be used as a segment in an extended programme or as standalone clip. Further, they were also produced in such a way that they could be easily and effectively delivered on DVD, web platforms or via mobile networks to handsets.
The response to the project has been extraordinary. What started as a Vodafone Ireland initiative has become significant within the global Vodafone group.
